Mel Counts Corridor Dedication December 04, 2014
The City of Coos Bay will honor one of its own on December 6th by dedicating the route between Isthmus Slough bridge (6th Avenue in Eastside) and the Catching Slough bridge (Coos River Highway in Eastside) as the Mel Counts Corridor.
Mel Counts was born and raised in Coos Bay (Eastside neighborhood), and he played high school basketball for Marshfield. Mel is considered the most accomplished basketball player in Marshfield’s history! After graduating from Marshfield in 1960, he attended Oregon State University where he was a two-time All-American, three-time MVP, and he still holds several school records to this day. Mel was a member of the 1964 Olympic Champion Team. In 1964 Mel was a first-round draft pick of the Boston Celtics, and he played on two world champion teams in Boston. Mel went on to play a total of 12 years in the NBA before retiring in 1976.
The dedication of Mel Counts Corridor will begin at 2:30 pm on Saturday, December 6, 2014, and take place on 6th Ave, just east of the Isthmus Sought. The public is encouraged to attend the dedication and take the opportunity to meet Mel Count in person.
