On Friday, May 6, the Coos Bay Police Department (CBPD) had four employees graduate from the 40-hour, Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) Training.  Officer Lyon, Officer Minor, Chaplain Alexander, and Records Specialist Westrum all attended this intensive training hosted by Coos Health and Wellness.

The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) program is a community partnership of law enforcement, mental health and addiction professionals, individuals who live with mental illness and/or addiction disorders, their families, and other advocates. This training aims to reduce the risk of serious injury or death during an emergency interaction between persons with mental illness and police officers through teaching skills and techniques to recognize and de-escalate situation with those in mental health related crisis.

The CBPD has begun training other staff in these methods to better serve those in crisis when they have interactions with staff other than patrol officers.  This training is geared towards collaboration and building relationships with other community partners, that may be better equipped to deal with these individuals to provide better short and long-term care.

Please help us in congratulating these employees on their accomplishment. They join 11 other employees from the CBPD training in CIT.
