Stepping Up with Additional Improvements at Old City Hall August 15, 2017

Work has begun to refurbish the exterior stairway at Old City Hall (also known as Marshfield City Hall).  Within two weeks, this critical piece of local culture and history will have improved access for visitors. Old City Hall is in the heart of the downtown Coos Bay on W. Central. The structure is included in the National Registry of Historic Places and is on the City’s newly established Local Landmark Registry, as part of the State’s Local Government Registry program. The restoration and preservation of this structure will provide aesthetic appeal to visitors and will help ensure the integrity of this iconic building. The project is scheduled to be completed on or before August 31, 2017.

The restoration project is made possible by two grants. The first is the City’s first Certified Local Government’s Restoration Grant, while the second consisted of a matching Facade Improvement Grant recently awarded to the applicant. The Facade Improvement Program provides a 50/50 grant to commercial property or business owner in the Urban Renewal District with a maximum grant award of $25,000 per fiscal year. The project will be a visual improvement to the building and the downtown area, which will assist in the revitalization of the Downtown District.

If you have any questions about this project or about the City’s Local Landmark Registry or the Facade Improvement Grant program, please contact Debbie Erler at 541-269-1181, extension 2259.
