Smoke Testing Near Ingersoll and Johnson Avenues April 11, 2018
In February the City was notified of a problem on S. Tenth Street between Ingersoll and Johnson avenues. After further investigation, it was determined that the sewer main between Ingersoll and Johnson is in bad condition and as a result causing substandard surface conditions. This section of pipeline was not identified in the City’s Master Plan, due to the poor condition of the pipes the project is identified as an emergency. While the City has deemed this as an emergency project and a repair must be made, it is still in the best interest of this project to undergo an expedited design process. Upon completion of the design phase, the project will be bid in this spring and constructed this summer.
In the upcoming weeks, City staff will smoke testing the sewer line. Smoke testing is a relatively straightforward process that consists of blowing smoke mixed with large volumes of air into the sanitary sewer line usually induced through the manhole. The smoke travels the path of least resistance and quickly shows up at sites that allow surface water inflow. This will identify all deficiencies and will aid the engineer during design. When designing a project with utilities underground it is important to have as much information as possible prior to excavation.
City Staff will work closely with homeowners and residents when smoke testing and public notification prior to testing will occur.
During the tests, people may see smoke coming from vent stacks on buildings or holes from the ground. Please don’t be alarmed as this smoke has no odor, is non-toxic, non-staining does not create a fire hazard, and will dissipate in a few minutes.
