House Fire Under Control in Eastside February 21, 2018
On February 19, at 9:10 a.m., the Coos Bay Fire Department responded to 527 10th Ave. in the Eastside District on a report of a smoke coming from the roof of a house. First arriving units found a two-story home with light smoke showing from the eaves and roof. The fire was under control at 9:28 a.m. Suppression personnel found an active fire within the exterior eave and attic of the home.
The fire originated in the eave then spread to the attic but was confined to that area. An investigation into the cause of the fire has been conducted by the Coos Bay Fire Department. The occupant had a fire in a wood stove that had been illegally installed and vented out of a window. The chimney pipe was too close to combustible materials and allowed all the heat to escape directly onto the roof eave. The home was posted as “substandard” in June 2017 and posted as “ordered to be vacated and secured” in July 2017. The home was occupied at the time of the fire and the lone occupant requested medical attention for smoke inhalation and was transported to Bay Area Hospital by Bay Cities Ambulance.
The Coos Bay Fire Department estimates the fire damage to the home to be $3,000. The occupant stated that he had no insurance on the building. A total of 11 firefighters and two engines responded to the scene. The Coos Bay Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the Coos Bay Police Department and Bay Cities Ambulance.
