Coos History Museum Hosts First Tuesday Talks Lecture Series April 18, 2018
Steve and Jeanne Woods, local Co-Authors and Coos Bay Pilot Members will present “A Historic and Contemporary Perspective on Piloting the Coos Bay Bar” during the First Tuesday Talk Lecture Series planned for Tuesday, May 1, 2018, at the Coos History Museum. The presentation will include sea stories and a slideshow about the hazardous work of guiding ships safely across the Coos Bay bar, including historical backgrounds of the Coos Bay Pilots. Captain Woods will share his perspectives of the port from 1862 to our present-day shipping concerns.
Captain Steven Woods has worked in the maritime industry for over 40 years, starting as a deckhand on tugboats at age 15. He currently works as a ship pilot, holding pilotage for Coos Bay, Yaquina Bay, and the Columbia River-Willamette River grounds. He is a board member on the State Board of Maritime Pilots, representing Coos Bay.
Jeanne Woods holds a master’s degree in education from Oregon State University and began her high school teaching career in 1980. She has taught in several South Coast school districts and enjoys designing and sewing costumes for local theatre groups.
The lecture will begin at 6:30 p.m. The museum, galleries, and store will be open for extended hours during the event. Cost for the event is $7 for adults. Admission is free for museum members.
In its second year, the First Tuesday Talks Lecture Series is a monthly event at the Coos History Museum. The First Thursday Talks Lecture Series is hosted February through June, and August through December. The series is sponsored by Al Peirce Co with in-kind support from The Mill Casino.
